Its original publication in 1980 marked the public culmination of a startling volte-face that had the woman credited with making porn acceptable denounce the industry and its practices wholeheartedly, claiming that she had been forced at gunpoint to perform scenes and that she had felt no pleasure in what she was doing. Linda Lovelace was the legendary star of Deep Throat and, later, a prominent feminist. She died in 2002.
